Autumn Salad Greens

David and Emele's garden Tauranga, New Zealand

May 2024

A simple dressing of dijon mustard and virgin olive oil that lets the herbs and tasty lettuces show their delightful range of flavours. I also harvested coriander, but that is for dinner :-) however a few leaves found their way into today’s salad.

It is mid autum here in New Zealand and although the nights are cold the days are bright, sunny and warm.  Our vegetable gardens are rich in herbs and lettuce right now.  Today I harvested lettuces, butternut, red mizuna, rocket, and a few leaves of radicchio.  Along with sorrel, red mustard, Italian parsley and a celery parsley plant a friend gave me which is surprisingly delicious, plus spring onion and carrot.  The dressing I used had garlic from our garden as well.

Our vege garden is very abundant right now, mostly because it is much warmer than usual for this time of year and I think also because I have started letting areas self seed.  I get a lot of produce and can easily remove any signs of disease or weak plants and still have plenty, with less need for spraying.  We have so much at times that we donate the excess to our local foodbank.
